ABRUZZO

Abruzzo is located in central Italy on a mostly mountainous territory (65%) and for the rest is largely composed of hills, extending from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea.
Sea, mountains, historic towns, rivers and lakes allow holidays and tours that suit all tastes.
In the mountains of Abruzzo can be found ski resorts like: Pescasseroli, Rivisondoli and Roccaraso, Campo Felice, Campo Imperatore, Ovindoli... equipped for skiing and winter sports.
The
elegant peaks of Gran Sasso, Monti della Laga or Majella slope gradually towards a magnificent hilly landscape and then finally reach the Adriatic coast, crossing historical and cultural landscapes as well as enchanting traditions.
Between mountains and hills there are beautiful valleys and historic natural treks like Aterno Valley, surrounded by ancient villages.
The region also boasts some magnificent
natural reserves like the famous National Park of Abruzzo, Parco del Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga with peculiar characteristics that offer protection to animals, plants and typical species like wolf, bear, royal eagle and many others.
Abruzzo’s
coastline is long and sandy with clear waters and surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation that allow comfortable holidays in full relax in modern beach resorts.
Not to be forgotten the charming small villages and art towns of the hinterland which preserve artistic masterpieces, monasteries, castles… all of them being popular destinations and included in many different tourist itineraries in the beautiful region of Abruzzo. The
main city, Aquila is one of the major art centres of Italy
Of great importance there are also Sulmona with its great heritage of gothic and renaissance monuments, Teramo of roman origin and with its lower part where it can be found remains of the theatre and amphitheatre dating back to the third and fourth centuries B.C or Pescocostanzo which still preserves an architecture of the buildings from Lombard ancient times.
Abruzzo is also a region suitable for a relaxing vacation, choosing for example the
thermal waters and the beneficial Spa treatments of Carmanico Terme.
Some local dishes of Abruzzo are: lamb and beef roasted on a wood fire, a large variety of fish, typical delicious local cheese as well as a mixture of sweet and spicy at the same time in the menu dishes.

Tourism by the lakes


The view offered by Abruzzo lakes is a wonderful landscape surrounded by beautiful green areas that offer many
opportunities for recreation.
In fact, some resorts offer many attractions.

Lake Bomba is a destination that attracts many tourists thanks to the "Green Island Tourist Center" with many facilities for tourists: a large restaurant, hostel, bungalows, camping and a swimming pool

Lake Scanno offers tourists numerous entertainment activities, cultural visits to places of art, relax, hiking, sports.
In fact, between the
Valleys of Sagittario and Sangro you can walk on a so called "Via naturale", a sort of “natural route” or visit the mountain station of Passo Godi that offers many winter opportunities for sport lovers.
During spring and summer you can enjoy the beauty of the mountains and the wilderness.
Trekking is a great activity to practice in the forests of Abruzzo.

Lake Penne offers visitors a sport complex called the “Sports Park” with swimming pools, tennis, soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, cycling and mountain biking.

Campotosto lake is the starting point for beautiful trekking journeys on nearby mountains, while the road around the lake is ideal for walking or cycling.

Sport at Abruzzo's Lakes


At different times of the year you can participate in different sporting, cultural and gastronomic events that can justify a fully booked vacation.
Thanks to the proximity of sea, lake and mountains, it is possible to practice any kind of sports or activities in full contact with the nature.
From classical
trekking, horse riding, mountain biking, boat, pedal boat, bird watching, cycling tourism by bicycle with the option “bike + train” or with Discover Italy’s organized tours, canoeing and windsurfing, kite-surfing, fishing…as well as wakeboard: a combination of skiing and snowboarding.This sport consists in being pulled by a motorboat with the feet on a special board, similar to the one of snowboarding, but wider and thicker; taking advantage of the waves created by the boat is possible to perform various jumps and stunts.
