GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT EMILIA ROMAGNA REGION AND BOLOGNA
Description: Emilia Romagna is the sixth Italian region as extension. It extends south of Po river to the ridge of the Apennines and the Adriatic coast until the resort of Cattolica.
It borders to the north with Veneto and Lombardy, to the south with Tuscany, Lazio, Marche and to the west with Piedmont and Liguria.
Bologna is the capital of the region and the other local provinces are Reggio-Emilia, Rimini, Modena, Parma, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena, Piacenza and Ravenna.
The name “Emilia” comes from the road Emilia that was built in sec. II BC by romans, linking the Adriatic and the Po Valley. Even the name “Romagna” has roman origins.
Description: Bologna, the regional capital of the province, has a central geographical location and, since ancient times, is used for trade with the rest of the territory. It is located on “Via Emilia” and is bordered by the rivers Reno and Savena.
Cuisine and Wine: The best-known specialties of Bologna´s cuisine are ”mortadella” and ”tortellini” stuffed with prosciutto, veal meat and parmesan cheese. Other famous dishes are baked ”lasagne”, ”ravioli” filled with ricotta with chopped parsley. Less famous is the "soup of Paradise" with bread crumbs and egg. Other specialties are Bolognese cutlet with ham, cheese and truffles and "bocconotti", vol-au-vent filled. You can also find in the Apennines ”crescentine” made of dough cooked on a special plate and eaten hot and stuffed with soft cheese or ham. In the Apennines we can also find ”tigelle”, thin sheets of bread served stuffed.
Among the desserts we recommend the traditional Christmas cake, a sort of spicy bread stuffed with raisins, candied fruit, pine nuts and chocolate and "spongata" a pastry filled with honey, pine nuts, walnuts, pan biscuit powder, raisins and spices.
Among the wines we reccomend Barbera and Sauvignon di Monte San Pietro, Trebbiano and Lambrusco. Delicious is also the Walnut liqueur.
