GENERAL INFORMATION
LOMBARDY REGION WITH ITS CULTURE, LAKES AND CULINARY TRADITION
Description: Lombardy is the most populated region in Italy and it borders with Switzerland to the north, Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige regions to the east, Emilia Romagna and Piedmont regions to the South West. The territory of Lombardy is mostly flat and mountainous. The capital of the region is Milan and the other provinces are Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Lodi, Mantova, Pavia, Sondrio and Varese.
The Lake District: Lombardy is famous for having the largest air-covered lake area, including the beautiful Lake Maggiore with the beautiful Borromean Islands; lake Como that includes the provinces of Como and Lecco and that has on its shores many characteristic villages such as Cernobbio, Menaggio and Moltrasio; lake Garda, which includes the spa town of Sirmione and other beautiful tourist resorts as Desenzano; lake Iseo, which includes Franciacorta area famous for its wine production.
Cuisine and Wine: Talking about a unique Lombard cuisine culture is practically impossible because the different areas have been influenced by their neighboring regions and the people who have conquered them each time. However, the recipes that are mostly reminiscent to Lombardy region are the famous "risotto alla Milanese” made with saffron and meat broth and “cotoletta alla milanese”/wiener schnitzel. We also recommend the delicious “ravioli di zucca” from Mantua’s region and “pizzoccheri di Valtellina”. “Bresaola” of Valtellina a sort of delicious dried beef comes also from this region.
The most typical dessert is certainly the Christmas cake/ panettone natalizio, but of lombard origins is also “colomba” cake. Another specialty is the cake “sbrisolona of Mantua”.The lombard wines are varied and can be tasted together with different dishes. The most famous are: Nebbiolo from Valtellina and those of Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese areas.
