GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE REGION TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE – SOUTH TYROL
Description Trentino Alto Adige: Trentino Alto Adige is Italy’s northern region that has a completely mountainous area characterized by beautiful valleys. Trentino Alto Adige borders with Austria to the north, at east and south with Veneto region, at west with Lombardy and Switzerland. Its provinces are Trento (regional capital) and Bolzano. This region has a special status and has two names because it consists of two distinct regions: Trentino (south) and the Alto Adige (north). These two areas are characterized by two different languages: in Trentino is spoken the Italian language while in Alto Adige there is a prevalence of the german language. In this region can be found the Dolomites, a mountainous area that offers mountains, glaciers and breathtaking valleys. There are also many winter resorts such as Madonna di Campiglio, Dobbiaco and Canazei. Formerly, this area was inhabited by the reni (in the third century BC) and then subsequently conquered by the Romans and the Lombards, who founded the Duchy of Trent, which belonged to Austria until 1918.
Cuisine and Wine: The typical cuisine of Trentino Alto Adige comes from the fusion of two cuisines belonging to the area of Trento (influences from Veneto, Lombardy and Habsburg area) and area of Bolzano (german and slavic influences.) A great protagonist of trentinian cuisine is undoubtedly polenta, prepared with cornmeal as well as with buckwheat flour. The polenta often accompanies meat dishes, fish or game. Among local dishes can be found "goulash", "canederli" (made with bread, sausage, bacon and grated cheese), "stinco di maiale al forno", " raoe alla trentina" cooked with lard. Very famous are the cheeses produced in the valleys, while among the desserts can be found the famous "strudel" made with apples, almonds, pine nuts and cinnamon. Among the wines we recommend you Cabernet and Merlot.
