GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT VALLE D’AOSTA REGION
Description: Valle d’Aosta is a region in northern Italy, located in the extreme north-west of the country and is also the smallest and least populated region of Italy. It borders to the east and south with Piedmont region, to the west with France and to the north with Switzerland. It is one of the regions with special status with two spoken languages, Italian and French (both recognized as official languages). The region capital is Aosta and is the only province in this region.
Cuisine and Wine: The typical cuisine of Valle d'Aosta is a mountainously cuisine characterized by the use of meat, dairy and vegetables. Among the wide variety of cheeses we find for example fontina, a fat and sweet cheese, while among the local dishes we can find “camoscio alla valdostana” cooked with wine and grappa. Then, we also recommend "Soupe de gri" a soup made of barley, "Soupe valpellinetze" made with potatoes, cabbage, cheese and meat broth and "Soupe paysenne", a soup made from stale bread, fontina, butter and onion. Another typical dish is “Fondue” made with fontina cheese, milk, butter and yolks of eggs, served with cubes of toasted bread, polenta or rice. Among the wines we recommend Val d'Aosta Blanc de Morgex de la Salle, Petit Arvine and Gamay.
