REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR FOREIGN PEOPLE AND ALL DIFFERENT TYPES OF CEREMONIES


In Italy there are three types of marriage:

  • Civil Marriage (celebrated in Municipality) performed by a civil status officer (a government official and not a religious organisation)
  • Canon Marriage (only in church) celebrated in front of the roman catholic minister
  • Concordat Marriage (first at the Municipality and than in church), celebrated in front of the roman catholic minister


Foreign citizens, residents abroad:

Civil Marriage
1. Passport / identity card
2. Nulla Osta - in the document must be indicated the personal data of the future couple, name, date and place of birth, fatherhood, motherhood, residence and free marital status. The document, written in Italian, must certify that there are no impediments to marriage, according to the laws of your country.The Nulla - Osta, may be issued:

- by the Consulate / Embassy in Italy, written in Italian and legalized by the competent Prefecture
- the competent authority of your country and must be translated and authenticated

If done in Italy, the signature of the consul needs to be authenticated at the Italian Prefecture with the exception of following countries acceding to the Convention of Monaco:Austria, Germany, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Rep. Moldova, Serbia-Montenegro (former Yugoslavia), Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Switzerland.

Austrian, Swiss and German citizens must issue the certificate of capacity to contract a marriage, issued by the Civil Office of the Municipality of residence (where you are resident) in the State of origin (free of legalization).

U.S and Australian citizens must issue:a statement declaration in front of the Consul of the United States of America in Italy, whose signature must be authenticated at the Prefecture, and a “atto di notorietà” statement that proves that the citizen can contract a marriage under the laws of the State of origin. The document is drawn up, with two witnesses in front of the competent Italian authority.

Church wedding with Catholic ceremony:
It is possible to organize weddings with catholic ceremony for foreign citizens if they are already married civilly in their own country or in Italy.

Synagogue wedding with Jewish ceremony:
The jewish wedding is recognized by the Italian State. Is possible to organize a wedding with Jewish ceremony in a synagogue for foreign citizens.

Church wedding with Protestant ceremony
For a protestant wedding celebrated by foreign citizens in Italy is first necessary to celebrate a civil ceremony at the Municipality, as the Italian State does not recognize the protestant ritual as being legal.

Church wedding with Orthodox ceremony:
The Italian state does not recognize a wedding celebrated in the Orthodox church as being legal. In case of foreign citizens, is first required a civil ceremony.

Symbolic Ceremonies
The symbolic ceremonies represent a renewal of the marriage vows, the commitments and the union between two partners and their mutual love.
There are no legal restrictions or obligations by celebrating these ceremonies, which has no recognition by the Italian state but it only means something for the couple.
The renewal ceremonies can be celebrated by an official representative who is a religious authority as anyone else that for the couple represents somebody important.
On these occasions may be issued a certificate reflecting the symbolic ceremony.These important moments can be celebrated in a church, a basilica, a private chapel, a park, garden, sea, mountains or on the italian beautiful hills
