GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT VENETO REGION
Description: Veneto is a region of northeastern Italy, bordering Austria to north, Friuli Venezia Giulia to north-east, Emilia Romagna to south, Lombardy to west and east and is also situated by the Adriatic Sea. Its territory is divided into following provinces: Venice (regional capital), Verona, Vicenza, Treviso, Rovigo, Belluno and Padua. The name of this region comes from its ancient inhabitants, the Venetians which arrived in the prehistoric period hunting the indigenous. Veneto shares with Lombardy and Trentino Alto Adige the Lake Garda, is crossed by the Po (the largest river of Italy) and the northern part of its boundaries are marked by the Dolomites and the Alps. From tourism point of view Veneto region offers a wide variety of options: in addition to the well-known and visited Venice, there are other famous resorts like Cortina d'Ampezzo, the famous seaside resorts of Jesolo, Venice Lido and Cioggia, Spa Abano Terme and other cities such as Verona, Vicenza, Treviso and Padua.
Cuisine and Wines: The Venetian cuisine is very diverse due to the geographical position of this region: we find here both mountainous dishes as well as fish dishes. The main courses include rice, vegetable soups, polenta, gnocchi and "bigoli", typical Venetian pastry similar to the second courses of spaghetti. Among the secondary courses of fish can be found "sardelle", eels dishes and "baccalà alla vicentina" , dried cod cooked with onions, grated cheese, parsley and seasonings. As secondary meat courses we also find recipes based on game and poultry; a typical recipe is “pastizada de caval veronese”, a stew made of horse meat cooked in a very aromatic sauce. Among the desserts we suggest the famous Pandoro of Verona and the famous “bussolà vicentino", donut-shaped cake flavored with Marsala wine, prepared for Easter. Among the wines we recommend: Bardolino, Cabernet, Merlot, Valpolicella and Recioto.
