BASILICATA

Also called Lucania, Basilicata is located in southern Italy and the capital is Potenza.
The region is located between the regions of Calabria and Puglia and is characterized by a mountainous area (46.8%) and hills where colours, landscapes and flavours have a unique beauty that offer a great sense of well-being, away from the hectic rhythm of the modern life.
The
mountains, like those of Pollino Sirino, the lucanian part of the Alps and the mountain group of Maddalena create a unique and beautiful landscape and merge with forests that cover them with small old villages, flavours and good fresh air of this wonderful piece of land.
The
Natural Parks such as the Chiese Rupestri (Sassi di Matera), the Natural Forest Reserves of Bosco Rubbio, Metaponto, the anthropological Monte Croccia or Lagonegro village, testify the natural beauty of Basilicata.
The lakes area is also very beautiful with
lakes of volcanic origin such as Monticchio or those artificially constructed like Pietra di Pertusillo, San Giuliano and Monte Cotugno, surrounded by a dense and lush vegetation, although still relatively unexplored.
Basilicata is also an important bathing region with shores by the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas.
The first of these shores include the
popular holiday resorts Metaponto and Policoro and is characterized by wide sandy beaches and the second side, the Tyrrhenian, includes the famous Gulf of Policastro, which has a coastline with higher beaches, full of rocks and a beautiful crystal clear sea.
Basilicata is a treasure to be discovered not only for its natural beauty but also for the important remains of the Greek and Roman civilizations.
In the resort of
Metaponto, for example, there are still traces of a thriving city of "Magna Grecia", Pythagoras home and location of the philosophical school. Nowadays Basilicata is also a modern and well equipped seaside resort.
Extraordinary and unusual landscapes, cities rich in history, seaside resorts and wonderful golden beaches,
well-being in thermal Spas such as Rapolla, Terme Ala and Latronico, Bagni di San Cataldo, Baths of Titus and Monticchio Baths, beautiful nature in the National Park of Polino, the Regional Natural Park of Gallipoli Cognato and the one of the lucanian Dolomite, history museums in the city of Potenza, Matera, Venosa, Metaponto, culture and traditions with popular festivals, typical cusine and hospitality….are all factors that confer a great charm to this beautiful italian region.

BASILICATA - THE REGION

Tourism at Abruzzo Lakes

St. Giuliano Oasis

The WWF Oasis of San Giuliano is a protected area with a humid climate where can be found a varied wildlife: waterfowl, otters and Egyptian vulture, a rare vulture that nests in the area.

Lake Pietra di Pertusillo

Preservation and respect for the environment has allowed the proliferation of numerous species of animals, also uncommon ones, often dwelling on the lake; among the animals living here can be found coots and mallards while in the most isolated parts of the lake can be found the heron.

Monticchio Lakes

Monticchio Lakes, eruptive vents of the ancient volcano, represent now a natural oasis.
In the past, the forest Monticchio used to be a refuge of brigands.
A rich and lush vegetation, characterized by dense forests of beech, pine, fir, chestnut, creates a stunning backdrop to the lakes of Monticchio.
Nature lovers will find this splendid habitat suitable for their explorations and can also taste the slightly fizzy water that flows naturally from the streams.

Lake Laudemio

The protected area is characterized by the presence of certain plants as "
Vicia sirinicae" and "Astragalus sirinicus”, two herbs that can be found only in the area of Mount Sirino. The resort is especially popular in winter due to presence of ski-equipped stations.
