GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ROME
Description: Rome, capital of Lazio Region and of Italy is located on the shores of Tiber river, not far from the Tyrrhenian coast.
The legend tells us that Rome has its origin in 753 b.c and that it took its name from Romolo, the brother of Remus, descendants of the trojan Aeneas.
In reality it developed gradually, extending itself up on seven hills whose inhabitants, after having merged in form of a league, founded the town and gave birth to the ancient history of the "eternal city".
The testimonies of two thousand years of history can be seen in magnificent monuments in every corner of the city. The first to begin major works was the Emperor Augustus that started the construction of the Imperial Forums; with the flavians the city reached its final appearance with the erection of Colosseum and Arch of Titus. From architectural and artistic point of view, Rome offers a great heritage of monuments from different historical periods. We mention Basilica of San Clemente and Santa Maria Trastevere when it comes to the medieval period and the beautiful Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna and Piazza San Pietro (Navona square, Spanish square with the spanish stairs and St. Peter's Square) that date back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Cuisine and Wine: The Roman cuisine is based on simple and natural ingredients. Among the first courses we find: “fettuccine alla romana”, seasoned with a sauce of tomato, ham, mushrooms and chicken giblets; “bucatini all’amatriciana” with bacon and hot pepper; “gnocchi alla romana” with semolina cooked in milk and baked afterwards with eggs, butter and cheese.Among the main courses we find “abbacchio” famous lamb (young lamb) roasted or “alla cacciatora” and scaloppine alla romana”, veal stuffed with prosciutto and sage and finally “pajata”, made with calf's gut. Other specialties are “carciofi alla romana” artichokes with herbs soaked in olive oil.
